The Delaware Humanities Forum will hold the 2014 Joseph P. del Tufo Annual Lecture with Dr. Jane E. Calvert at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at First and Central Presbyterian Church on Market Street in Wilmington. Dr. Calvert will present “First Among Equals”: The Enlightened Political and Social Reforms of John Dickinson. The lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are required by Wednesday, October 8, 2014.
A ticketed reception will immediately follow the lecture. The reception will be held at The Wilmington Club on Market Street. Tickets are $40 per person and must be purchased in advance by October 8, 2014.
Dr. Jane E. Calvert is associate professor of history at the University of Kentucky and the director/chief editor of the John Dickinson Writings Project (JDP). She earned her Ph.D. in early American history from the University of Chicago in 2003. After publishing her first book, Quaker Constitutionalism and the Political Thought of John Dickinson (2009), she began working to collect and publish Dickinson’s compete writings and selected correspondence. The first volume is expected to go to press in 2015. Dr. Calvert’s work has been supported and endorsed by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Historic Publications and Records Commission, as well as leading research libraries across the country, including the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the American Philosophical Society, the Newberry Library, and the Huntington Library. Private donors have also generously contributed to the JDP, including, among others, the Friends of the John Dickinson Mansion and the Society for Colonial Wars in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
